Coral Reef Care
Conservation and protection of marine ecosystems (Indonesia)
CRC initiates and organizes reef conservation projects and raises public awareness of the importance of coral reefs and the threats they face. Our main efforts to protect the reefs are focused on establishing more marine protected areas. While about 16% of the world's land area is protected, less than 3% of the world's oceans are seriously protected, even though 70% of the earth is covered by water. Actively protecting a large marine area under the right conditions increases the chances of the ecosystem recovering. These protected areas provide refuge, breeding grounds and food, which has a positive effect on the surrounding areas. This phenomenon, known as the spillover effect, occurs when adult marine life migrates out of the protected area and the neighbouring ecosystems benefit.
